Five Herbal Aphrodisiacs

Well, mostly herbal aphrodisiacs.

Many herbs can healthily increase your libido. Herbs like ginseng and muira puama have been used for centuries to enhance sex drive. Oysters, a common aphrodisiac, contain an amino acid called carnitine that increases male virility when ingested in sufficient quantities. Arugula has been shown to increase female libido because it contains high amounts of zinc, which is thought to help with arousal. Vanilla beans contain phenylethylamine, which increases blood flow and triggers the release of endorphins — chemicals produced by the brain during sexual excitement — when consumed orally or inhaled as steam from boiling water steeped with vanilla beans.

Muira Puama

Muira puama (Ptychopetalum olacoides) is a tropical vine that grows in South America, Asia, and Africa. It has a long history of being used as an aphrodisiac and treating erectile dysfunction.

The plant’s seeds contain chemicals called iridoid glycosides, which are believed positively affect on sexual function. These chemicals include ptychobarboline and tetrandrine—the latter is similar to epimedium’s flavonoids in that it may increase blood flow to the penis by dilating blood vessels. Other studies suggest muira puama can help improve orgasmic response, erection quality and frequency of sex drive; however, more research needs to be done before these claims can be substantiated.

While most herbal medicines don’t require any special safety precautions beyond those associated with conventional drugs (e.g., taking them on an empty stomach), this isn’t true for muira puama: some people may experience side effects from its high tannin content if they consume too much of it or take it along with other herbs containing tannins (red wine).

Oysters

Oysters are the most famous aphrodisics for a good reason. Oysters contain zinc, an essential mineral for testosterone production. They also have vitamin B12, which is vital for a healthy libido. So if you want to get your loved one in the mood (or vice versa), start with an order of oysters at dinner.

A study conducted by researchers at Harvard Medical School found that eating seafood—particularly shellfish—can increase sperm count in men and women alike. “Oysters are rich in zinc, which helps produce sperm and testosterone,” said Dr Aaron Keselamani, MD, director of reproductive medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

You may have noticed that this advice doesn’t apply to vegetarians or vegans—but don’t worry: plenty of other options are available! Pumpkin seeds also have lots of zinc in them, so add these to your diet.

Ginseng

Ginseng is a root used for thousands of years to increase energy and stamina. It can also boost your immune system, improve your mood and help with erectile dysfunction. The herb Ginseng has a long history as an herbal aphrodisiac. Furthermore, Ginseng is also used for enhanced performance and vitality.

Ginseng can be consumed in tea or as a supplement. If you’re considering taking ginseng supplements, talk to your doctor if you have any medical conditions or are taking medication such as blood thinners.

Arugula

Arugula is an herb, and it’s also a green leafy vegetable. It has a peppery taste and can be eaten raw or cooked. In addition, Arugula is easy to find and inexpensive.

Arugula contains antioxidants that boost the immune system and help prevent cancer. Arugula is high in calcium, magnesium, and potassium, which helps regulate blood pressure. It also has vitamins A and C, which promote healthy skin and antioxidants that help fight off free radicals (cell damage).

Vanilla Beans

Vanilla beans are the seeds of a tropical orchid. They have been used as a flavoring in foods and drinks for centuries, but their aphrodisiac properties have been recognized since ancient times.

Today, scientists believe that vanilla contains compounds called vanillin and vanillic acid that enhance the effects of serotonin, a brain chemical that regulates mood. Because these chemicals also increase blood flow to the genitals and stimulate sexual arousal, people often use vanilla extract as an alternative to Viagra!

Herbs can healthily increase your libido.

If you want to increase your libido, herbs can do it healthily. They may help you feel more energetic or relaxed, confident or connected with your body, and they will not mess with the delicate balance of hormones that control sexual health.
